Applause: Kudos to Staff Sgt. Sky Mote, California School Orchard Project, Active 20-30 Club

Kudos to: Staff Sgt. Sky Mote, U.S. Marine from El Dorado County

Accomplishment: Posthumously honored with sign recognizing valor

Details: Mote, 27, was killed Aug. 10, 2012, in a village in Helmand province when a uniformed Afghan policeman opened fire on Marines inside their tactical operations center. The memorial crossing sign on Highway 50 at Ray Lawyer Drive in Placerville recognizes Mote’s devotion to duty.

Kudos to: Common Vision’s California School Orchard Project

Accomplishment: Planted 12 fruit trees at Pacific Elementary

Details: The trees at the Sacramento City Unified School district campus are projected to be both a science lesson and a snack in the coming years. Soil Born Farms has agreed to maintain the trees and work with Harvest Sacramento to pick the fruit.

Kudos to: Men’s and Women’s Active 20-30 Club of Sacramento

Accomplishment: Provided shopping and haircuts to Rosa Parks School students

Details: The club teamed up with the Rosa Parks Student Support Center to provide 100 students with shopping at Kohl’s, a free haircut from Paul Mitchell School and a new backpack. Students were paired with a 20-30 member who helped them buy clothes and shoes worth up to $144. The club also chartered buses and provided breakfast.
