Water-wise tip: Slow down flow with aerator

This is part of a weekly feature in Home & Garden, highlighting ways residents can save water.

•  Install aerators on bathroom faucets.

Here’s another little fix that can add up over time. Aerators slow the flow out of faucets while still delivering a forceful stream. A simple aerator, which screws into the faucet, costs about $1. (Some local water agencies offer them free to customers.) On the bathroom faucet, an aerator can save an estimated 1.2 gallons per person per day. For a family of four, that adds up to more than 1,700 gallons a year.
