Sacramento Bee garden writer Debbie Arrington won the 2015 Silver Award of Achievement from the Garden Writers Association for her newspaper column writing, the GWA announced. The Bee’s home and garden columnist since 2008, Arrington was cited for 2014 columns on such topics as lawn lasagna, spring flowers amid drought and stink bug invasions.
“The information is very reader- and region-oriented, which makes the columns valuable to readers,” wrote the GWA judges. “Nice combination of information, including how-to.”
“Loaded with good information, researched and reported in an authoritative but friendly style,” the judges added in entry critiques.
GWA includes more than 1,400 members worldwide. The winners will be honored at the organization’s annual symposium Sept. 21 in Pasadena.
“The Media Award winners have been judged by industry experts and show significant distinction and merits that exemplify exceptional work,” said Larry Hodgson, GWA president.
Other newspaper writers honored by the GWA include Beth Botts of the Chicago Tribune, Jeff Lowenfels of the Anchorage Dispatch News and Kim Palmer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
