Escapes: Oakland’s got art and soul

Oakland is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Art + Soul festival in downtown Oakland with spotlight performances from local vertical dance company BANDALOOP, percussionist and singer Shelia E. and San Francisco funk band The Family Stone.

The event offers hundreds of local artisan and food vendors, along with a national poetry slam, street-style dance-offs, a world dance festival, a circus stage and blues, soul and gospel acts. Children can enjoy a Family Fun Zone where they can bounce in playhouses, spin in tea cups and get their faces painted.

The festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2. Admission is free for those 12 and under, and $7-12 for everyone else. For more information, visit

Hot August Nights

What: Reno and Sparks’ historic classic car event is kicking off in Virginia City with nightly cruises, a celebrity Show-n-Shine, a poker run and free live entertainment and merchandise. Classic car lovers won’t want to miss this trip back in time to the ’50s and ’60s era of rock ’n’ roll, pomade-slicked hair and purring, hot-rod engines.

Celtic Festival

What: Grab your kilt, gather your clan and get to this year’s 48th annual Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, a two-day celebration of Scottish and Gaelic heritage. The festival’s central event is the Highland Games and caber toss, but it will also feature a historical re-enactment of life in 16th century Scotland, a Children’s Glen with crafts and a scavenger hunt, sheepdog herding, live Celtic musical entertainment, a Highland dance competition, a classic drum major contest and performances by bagpipe bands.

Paper Fair

What: This Vintage Paper Fair is said to offer one of the largest selection of old paper products in the West with more than 1 million items for sale. Vintage paper products include postcards, trade cards, stereoviews, photographs, labels, brochures and sports memorabilia.

When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 1, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 2

Art in the Gardens

What: Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens’ 24th Annual Art in the Gardens showcases local fine art in watercolor, culinary and hand-crafted forms. Visitors can sip wine, listen to music and meet artists. The daylong event benefits horticulture, conservation and education programs at the Gardens.

When: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 1

Santa Cruz Trail Run

What: Trail blazers, grab your trainers for a breathtaking 10K, half-marathon or 30K run through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park that winds through redwoods, high ridges and river crossings.
