From rock to rap, music fills Xclamation Festival

The San Joaquin County Fairgrounds will come alive with dozens of musical artists on on more than 13 stages at Xclamation Festival, or X Fest. Headlining acts include rapper T-Pain, punk band Suicidal Tendencies and many more.

The X Fest has been a yearly occurrence since 2000, bringing over 100,000 people to the streets of downtown Modesto.

This year, Stockton gets to host the event which gets going at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Tickets for people 21 and older cost $20 in advance and $30 at the door. Hotel packages are $130.

Jazz in the Pines


What: More than two dozen artists will perform at the three-day Jazz in the Pines festival. Performers include pianist Diane Schuur and Haley Reinhart of “American Idol” fame.

When: 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19; 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20; 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21

Pioneer Play


What: The one-woman play “The Secret Life of Spantsa” dramatizes the life of the pioneer celebrity Olive Oatman, who was adopted by a Mojave tribe as a teenager in the 1800s when her family was traveling west.

When: 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, through Saturday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Aug. 28.

Where: Arcata Playhouse, 1251 Ninth St., and other venues throughout Humboldt County

Cost: Suggested $10 donation


Escaping Alcatraz


What: The high-energy San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz will showcase competitive swimming, biking and running over 30 miles.

When: Events are held Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21. The race starts at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Where: View portions of the race at the St. Francis Yacht Club at 99 Yacht Road and Immigrant Point Overlook, at the Presidio on Washington Blvd.

Cost: Free for spectators; triathlon registration for an adult costs $450, space permitting.


Zucchini Festival


What: The Hayward Zucchini Festival will highlight the green summer squash with zucchini dishes, live music and more.

When: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21

Where: Kennedy Park, 19501 Hesperian Blvd.

Cost: $10 general admission; $5 seniors and children; free for children 5 and under


Beer Week


What: Redding will hold a nine-day celebration of more than 70 craft brews with events held throughout Shasta County.

When: Event times vary from Aug. 19 to Aug. 27.

Where: Various breweries throughout Redding. The opening ceremony will be hosted at the Redding Civic Center, 700 Auditorium Drive.

Cost: Admission is free to most venues; $13 to $41 for the opening ceremony; $15 to $65 for beer and food pairings
