It’s still a little rough to accept the reality of a world without Tom Petty – a night of selections from his indelible catalog may take a bit of the sting away, especially in the hands of the Nickel Slots and their enigmatic frontman Tony Brusca (who knows a thing or two about how to do a proper cover). Also diving into some Petty tunes are Devon Galley and the Heavy Hold, Commerce TX, the New Past and Adam Varona’s tribute act Petty Party. $10. www.facebook.com/events/1623147714390307.
Mardi Gras Second Line with Element Brass Band
4:30 p.m. Tues. Feb. 13
For the fifth year in a row, traditional second line wunderkind Element Brass Band leads a romp through the streets of midtown for Sacramento’s own version of Fat Tuesday. Mulvaney’s (near L and 19th) is the kickoff point at 4:30 p.m., with stops and drink specials at the Porch and Easy on I. The crawl culminates at Torch Club at 8 p.m., where there’s more live music from JT Lawrence Git Down, no cover and, of course, more drink specials – because it’s Fat Tuesday! www.facebook.com/events/215642529004481.
Chali 2Na & House of Vibe
9 p.m. Wed. Feb. 14
Not exactly your typical candlelit dinner and flowers type of Valentine’s Day celebration, but there’s no shortage of heart in the decidedly atypical veteran hip-hop maestro Chali 2Na, one of the core architects of Jurassic 5 and Latin funksters Ozomatli. He’ll be the front-and-center emcee backed by his relentlessly soulful band House of Vibe. Doors 8 p.m. $15 adv/$20 door. www.harlows.com.
