Metallica, arguably the most famous metal band of all time, announced its first Sacramento concert in nine years Monday as part of a 34-city tour.
The North American leg of the 2018-19 WorldWired Tour touches down at Golden 1 Center on Friday, Dec. 7. Tickets from $61.44 to $131.44 plus taxes and fees go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 2 at TicketMaster, with presale available to fan club members as early as 11 a.m. Tuesday. Every purchase includes a complimentary physical or digital copy of the band’s most recent album, “Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct.”
Metallica has played 11 shows in Sacramento since 1985, including a 1996 jam session in the Tower Records parking lot, according to the band’s website. They last played in Sacramento at Arco Arena on Dec. 8, 2009, eight years and 364 days before the Golden 1 Center concert.
Two original Metallica members – lead screamer James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich – remain with the band, as does lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, who joined in 1983. Bassist Robert Trujillo has been touring with the band since 2003.
The WorldWired Tour skips California’s bigger cities for Sacramento and Fresno, and a similar trend can be seen on the rest of the trek. Texas stops are limited to El Paso and Lubbock, and Metallica will head into upstate New York to play in Buffalo and Albany rather than the Big Apple.
A 2017 tour by the same name sold 1.5 million tickets and netted $153 million in sales, the most of any rock act, Blabbermouth reported. Metallica has won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Golden 1 Center had teased the possibility of a Metallica show over the weekend, posting an ominous, crackling video to Facebook 15 minutes after the band did so Friday. A similar Facebook post Saturday featured the caption “Fade to Black,” one of Metallica’s best-known songs.
The Giants have celebrated the Bay Area band with “Metallica Night” for the last six years, and Hetfield will perform the star-spangled banner before a game against the Washington Nationals on April 23.
