Fans of “Star Trek” are celebrating the 51st anniversary of the show’s Sept. 8, 1966, television premiere.

The original series introduced fans to Kirk, Spock, Uhura and the rest of the crew of the USS Enterprise. Later series and films continued the story with new generations and new ships (plus a space station).

The newest series, “Star Trek: Discovery,” premieres Sept. 24 on CBS, with the rest of the series airing on the All Access streaming service. The “Discovery” cast offered a special greeting Friday to fans in honor of the unofficial “Star Trek Day.”

Original cast member William Shatner also marked the occasion.

And, of course, thousands of fans posted their own well-wishes.
