King of Corned Beef reigns at this South Sacramento bar

If anyone has earned the title King of Corned Beef, it’s Clair Brown. He’s been on the Sacramento restaurant scene for more than 50 years, first as the owner of Brownie’s Gas Lamp, and for the last 30 years at the oh-so-atmospheric Brownie’s Lounge. He estimates he’s cooked 285,000 pounds of the salt-cured brisket in his culinary career.

We ran into him on a recent Thursday, after we had demolished our double-fisted stacked corned beef on rye sandwiches, smeared with searing house-made horseradish and mustard, and dipped in steaming jus, with a side of potato salad. Brown is most always on site, so look him up and have a chat. And don’t wait till St. Pat’s Day to try his corned beef.

$9.25 (cash only) Thursdays only, 5858 Land Park Drive, Sacramento; (916) 424-3058, www.facebook.com/brownieslounge
