Petaluma is much more than the town you drive through when day-tripping to Bodega Bay.

For one thing, it’s the home of Della Fattoria Cafe Bakery, selling world-class baked goods including hand-shaped loaves of aromatic bread baked in wood-fired brick ovens. Bon Appetit magazine included it on its list of the “Top 10 Best Bread Bakeries in America.”

For another, it will be the site of the ninth annual Artisan Cheese Festival, March 20-22, featuring cheesemakers, chefs, restaurateurs, brewers, winemakers, farmers, dairymen, ranchers and other experts from California’s eat-and-drink world, all sharing their products and knowledge.

One highlight will be the Chefs vs. Chefs: The Best Bite competition on March 21. Another is the inclusion of the Sacramento cheese-centric restaurant The Rind. Also: farm tours, cheese and wine tastings, and a fully stocked marketplace complete with cooking demonstrations and cookbook signings.

The action will be at the Sheraton hotel, 745 Baywood Drive, Petaluma; (707) 283-288. For ticketing and details, go to www.artisancheesefestival.com.
