Nido could be called Magpie’s charming little sibling except the homey cafe deserves to be recognized on its own. It remains a low-key oasis on the bustling R Street corridor where big, bold food statements are all the rage. Specializing in seasonal “new American eats,” the cafe currently features a fabulous house-made sausage sandwich. A thick soft-pretzel bun perfectly cradles the sausage, which is made with hops from Kingbird Farms. You’ll likely end up eating it with a knife and fork since it’s really too formidable to stuff in your mouth. Kale salad with pecans, cranberries and a brisk apple cider vinaigrette accompanies the sandwich, as do house-made pickles, both dill and sweet.
