When we ordered the hummus at Sacramento’s Hook & Ladder, we were expecting a container of garbanzo-bean spread with bread on the side. Instead we were served this elegant, crisp-grilled flatbread topped by a lively mix of English peas and garbanzo beans. Feta cheese adds salty snap, and shaved carrots freshness and crunch.
We tried this starter at dinner, but it’s also available at brunch – now happening from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays as well as on weekends. Matt Masera (Mother, Saddle Rock), who took over late last year as H&L executive chef, said weekday lunch was not doing as well as weekend brunch because foot traffic was lacking near the S Street restaurant during the workweek, so Hook & Ladder is trying a weekday brunch menu that includes braised bacon Benedict, loco moco and a Masera burger with two thin beef patties, cheddar and Calabrian chili oil.
