Circumstances had landed us on I-75 North, headed toward Atlanta, when we got off the interstate at Exit 109 and followed the signs to 1315 Tippettville Road in Vienna, Ga. It led us through pecan and peach groves to Ellis Bros. Pecans Co., a “family owned and operated wholesale-retail business that opened in 1944.”
We went inside the sprawling wood building (with rocking chairs on the front porch, of course) and found a wonderland of pecans. Bins and bins of pecans, shelves and display cases stacked and filled with pecans, so many pecans that we got dizzy just looking at them.
Pecan halves, pieces, meal, butter, in the shell, out of the shell, raw, roasted, with salt and without. Pecans glazed with honey and coated with essence of key lime; praline and hickory smoked pecans, pecans flavored with jalapeno and garlic and mesquite. Oh, and pecan pies and butter pecan ice cream. And more: peanuts and peanut brittle, jams and jellies, walnuts and almonds. On and on.
We tasted a pecan sampling and had a eureka! moment. These pecans were the real thing — big, buttery, crisp and fresh-tasting. Save yourself a cross-country trip and take a look at www.werenuts.com (as in, “We’re nuts”), where you can arrange for pecans to be mail-ordered to you. Or phone (800) 635-0616 if ya’ll just want to chat.
