The editors at the all-things-food-and-drink website Daily Meal have conspired with their contacts around the nation to come up with their list of the 101 best restaurants in the U.S. Those “contacts” include “restaurant critics, food and lifestyle writers, bloggers, Daily Meal city editors, special contributors” and other qualified judges, excluding chefs.

One criterion in assembling the impressive list was the answer to this question: “Which restaurants, old or new, adhering to tradition or cutting-edge, would you recommend to your friends, and trust that they could safely recommend in turn six degrees further?

California has a solid showing on the list, with 11 in greater Los Angeles, seven in San Francisco, three in the Napa Valley (French Laundry, Bouchon Bistro, Restaurant at Meadowood), one in Berkeley (Chez Panisse), one in Los Gatos (Manresa) and one in Oakland (Camino).

As for San Francisco, many of the usual suspects showed up: Zuni Cafe, Quince, State Bird Provisions, Gary Danko, Mission Chinese (a.k.a. Lung Shan), Benu and Michael Mina. Bring money.
