Hazelnuts get the sweet ‘n’ heat treatment

It’s always an adventure to wander the aisles at stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market, where new and interesting items consistently make surprise appearances.

We came across an Albina City Nuts product at Whole Foods in Folsom that stopped us, mostly because it wasn’t another riff on almonds or peanuts.

Sweet & Salty Hazelnuts are spiced with organic cane juice, cane sugar, honey, cinnamon, salt and two kinds of chiles — ancho and arbol. We bought a quarter-pound for $6.12 and liked the complements of nut crunch and sweet ‘n’ heat.

Hazelnuts (a.k.a. filberts) are essential ingredients in Nutella spread and Italian Frangelico liqueur. These particular hazelnuts — a.k.a. filberts — were grown in Oregon. Oh, and quickly eaten in Sacramento.
