Those who’ve been anticipating fried chicken and southern food near Southside Park have to wait a few extra days. South restaurant at 2005 11th St. was scheduled to open Thursday, but after a three-hour inspection today, the owners announced via South’s Facebook page that a few minor tweaks need to be made. If all goes to plan, South will open on Tuesday.
But hey, what’s a few extra days? Owners N’Gina and Ian Kavookjian have been trying to open South for the better part of two years. The restaurant was originally scheduled to open in September of 2013 at a different location near Southside Park. But after some permitting issues and other snags, the Kavookjians moved their operations to its current spot, which was formerly the home of Cheung Hing Co. market.
The owners were recently eying a mid-November opening, and held two sold-out and well received pop up dinners to test drive their menu. At least it appears the finish line is near. Really, this time.
