May is the start of Sacramento’s summer festival season, with months of food, drink and good times ahead.

Out of the chute comes the 14th annual Taste of Carmichael, with 16 restaurants joining wineries and breweries to offer a groaning board of tastes. Among the eateries will be Matteo’s Pizza & Bistro, El Papagayo (Mexican) and Firebird (Slavic). Raley’s will present a “huge spread,” including jambalaya, said spokeswoman Linda Martin.

Also on site: live entertainment, vintage car displays, raffles and a silent auction. Check it from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 13 at La Sierra Community Center, 5325 Engle Road, Carmichael. Tickets are $40; 916-489-4476 or at the door. This is a fund-raiser for the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael, benefiting schools and charities.
