Serial bank robber who gave himself up gets a break from federal judge

Gregory Jerome Brown, the 28-year-old Utah man who went on a three-state bank robbery spree that began in Auburn in October, then turned himself in to the FBI, was sentenced Wednesday in Sacramento to five years and three months in federal prison.

The sentence by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller followed a recommendation from Brown’s assistant federal defender, David Porter, who argued in court filings that Brown had led a troubled life and had taken numerous positive steps while in custody that merited leniency.

Brown, who pleaded guilty and cooperated with FBI agents, could have received a sentence of up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine.
