Visitors to the 1,750-acre Donner Memorial State Park in Nevada County have a number of recreational activities available to them in the summer -- swimming, wind surfing, camping, boating, fishing, water-skiing and hiking -- and in the winter -- cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park's Emigrant Trail Museum and Pioneer Monument were built to remember early pioneers, including the Donner Party. Winter hit while the Donner Party was crossing the Sierra in 1846 and the members were forced to camp near Lake Donner. They faced starvation and many died before rescue attempts were made.
