SUPER: SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN/R-ARIZONA/REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL

SOT: (:53)

SAYS: "ON THE ISSUE OF IMMIGRATION REFORM I THINK THE POLLS SAY MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS CULTURALLY DIVERSE STATE SUPPORT IMMIGRATION REFORM, NOW I AM CLEAR THAT THERE IS PART OF OUR REPUBLICAN BASE THAT FEELS INTENSELY ABOUT THIS ISSUE, IT'S MY JOB TO CONVINCE THEM THIS IS A NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE, AND WE NEED TO ADDRESS IT ON THE ISSUE OF THE WAR IN IRAQ, I'VE SAID MANY TIMES I WOULD MUCH RATHER LOS A CAMPAIGN THAN LOSE THE WAR, I THINK THE STRATEGY THAT WE MUST GIVE IT A CHANCE TO SUCCEED, BUT I'M VERY AWARE THIS IS AN UNPOPULAR WAR, I HAVE TO DO WHAT I THINK IS RIGHT FOR AMERICA. I'M WILLING TO TAKE WHATEVER POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES."

SUPER: FILE

CONT. VO: (:15) MCCAIN INDICATED HE WAS COMMITTED TO CAMPAIGNING IN CALIFORNIA. HE HAS NOT ASKED ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER FOR HIS ENDORSEMENT, BUT IS AN ADMIRER OF CALIFORNIA'S GOVERNOR.

SUPER: SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN/R-ARIZONA/REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL

SOT: (:45)

SAYS: "FIRST OF ALL HE AND I SHARE MANY ATTRIBUTES AS YOU CAN EASILY TELL, SECOND OF ALL I ADMIRE THE JOB HE HAS DONE HERE IN CAL-EE-FORNIA, BRINGING REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATS TOGETHER ON ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE TO THE STATE I APPRECIATE HIS COMMITMENT TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE SO OF COURSE I WOULD BE HONORED BY HIS ENDORSEMENT, I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF HE DECIDES TO STAY OUT OF THIS UNTIL THE NOMINATION IS DETERMINED CERTAINLY I WOULD WELCOME HIS ENDORSEMENT, HE'S GIVEN NO INDICATION TO ME WHETHER HE'D DO SUCH A WISE THING."

VO TAG: MCCAIN CHIDED REPUBLICANS FOR NOT SUPPORTING HIS AND UNITED STATES SENATOR JOE LIEBERMAN'S LEGISLATION FOR ESTABLISHING A NATIONAL SYSTEM FOR COMPANIES TO TRADE CREDITS FOR CARBON EMISSIONS. CALIFORNIA'S LEGISLATION SIGNED LAST YEAR CALLS FOR THE AIR RESOURCES BOARD TO SET UP SUCH A SYSTEM WITHIN THE STATE.

EXTRA BITES:

SUPER: SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN/R-ARIZONA/REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL

SOT: (:34)

SAYS: "THEY SHOULD BE STRONGLY IN SUPPORT OF SENATOR LIEBERMAN'S AND MY LEGISLATION FOR CAP AND TRADE. WE SHOULD BE HAVING LITERALLY A MANHATTAN PROJECT ON ALTERNATIVE ENERGY, WE SHOULD BE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN THAT NUCLEAR POWER SHOULD BE DEVELOPED AS FAST AS WE CAN BUILD THOSE INSTALLATIONS. WE SHOULD BE DOING A LOT MORE AS REPUBLICANS."

SUPER: BILL JONES/MCCAIN SUPPORTER/FORMER CALIFORNIA SECRETARY OF STATE

SOT: (:17)

SAYS: "I THINK THE CASE HERE THAT CAN BE MADE IS JOHN MCCAIN'S BASE IS SOLID, WE ARE BUILDING ON THAT BASE ANYONE ELSE IS A NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK AND NOT BEEN IN THIS ROAD AS THE SENATOR WAS IN 2000."

SUPER: ASSEMBLYWOMAN BONNIE GARCIA/R-CATHEDRAL CITY

SOT: (:12)

SAYS: "ES UN TEMA IMPORTANTE ... SENADOR MCCAIN."

SUPER: ASSEMBLY SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ/D-LOS ANGELES

SOT: (:20)

2. PLANNED PARENTHOOD RADIO SPOTS VO/SOT

LIVE: PLANNED PARENTHOOD AND OTHER COMMUNITY CLINIC OPERATORS ARE COMPLAINING THE STATE BUDGET IS SHORT CHANGING THEM 12 BILLION DOLLARS. THEY SAY THAT MONEY IS NEEDED TO PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENTS TO DOCTORS AND NURSE PRACTITIONERS THAT PROVIDE CONTRACEPTION AND CANCER SCREENING TO ONE MILLION WOMEN ON MEDI-CAL EACH YEAR.

SUPER: TODAY/DEWEY SQUARE GROUP/SACRAMENTO

VO: (:15) THE GROUP'S LATEST STRATEGY IS AIRING RADIO ADVERTISEMENTS, URGING CONSTITUENTS IN LOS ANGELES, SAN DIEGO AND THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA TO CALL THEIR LEGISLATORS OR THE GOVERNOR TO DEMAND THE 12 BILLION DOLLARS BE INCLUDED. LOBBYISTS FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD SAY THE FUNDING THEY ARE REQUESTING IS NOT FOR ABORTIONS.

SUPER: KATHY KNEER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/PLANNED PARENTHOOD AFFILIATES OF CALIFORNIA

SOT: (:31)

SAYS: "THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER SOCIAL COSTS THAT ARE IMPACTED IF WE FAIL TO DO THIS ONE LINE ITEM IN HEALTH, SO I THINK IT'S A GOOD INVESTMENT. THE GOVERNOR'S BUDGET PROPOSED A 1.5 BILLION DOLLAR RESERVE. THAT'S JUST A RESERVE, 12 MILLION DOLLARS IS ABSOLUTELY I DON'T WANT TO CALL IT BUDGET DUST BUT IT'S A SPECK IN THE BUDGET."

SUPER: ASSEMBLY SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ/D-LOS ANGELES

SOT: (:30)

SAYS: "IF YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR ONE GROUP, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR OTHER GROUPS AS WELL. WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE ON WHAT'S IMPORTANT AND WHAT ISN'T? YOU HAVE GROUPS THAT DO CANCER SCREENING DOCTORS THAT SEE PATIENTS THAT SEE PATIENTS WHERE THEY'RE GETTING FIVE OR TEN CENTS ON THE DOLLAR, YOU'VE GOT SOME DOCTORS THAT ARE LOSING MONEY, WHAT ABOUT THEM, ARE THEY NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GET A REIMBURSEMENT?"

VO TAG: THE ENGLISH RADIO ADS IN LOS ANGELES ASK CONSTITUENTS TO CALL THE GOVERNOR, AND SPANISH RADIO ASK TO CALL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ. THE ADS IN THE BAY AREA SAY TO CALL SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE DON PERATA AND IN SAN DIEGO TO CALL SENATE BUDGET CHAIR WOMAN DENISE MORENO DUCHENY. THE LAWMAKERS MENTIONED IN THE ADS ARE ALL DEMOCRATS.

3. CAMPUS SHOOTING SURVIVAL TRAINING VO/SOT

LIVE:

ABOUT A HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED A SURVIVAL TRAINING SESSION TODAY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LEARNING HOW TO REACT DURING A POTENTIAL SHOOTING RAMPAGE. THE TRAINING IS BEING OFFERED IN RESPONSE TO THE APRIL SHOOTINGS AT VIRGINIA TECH, WHICH LEFT 32 PEOPLE DEAD AND MANY MORE WOUNDED.

SUPER: TODAY/ UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT DAVIS

THE TRAINING PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED BY CAMPUS POLICE, AND IS BASED ON TRAINING PROGRAMS USED FOR NON-UNIFORMED EMPLOYEES OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS. U.C. DAVIS POLICE CHIEF ANNETTE SPICUZZA SAYS THE PROGRAM BEING TAUGHT INCLUDES FIVE SURVIVAL STRATEGIES, THOUGH NONE OF THE STRATEGIES ARE PRESENTED AS A WAY TO GUARANTEE SURVIVAL DURING AN ON-CAMPUS SHOOTING SPREE. SUPER: CHIEF ANNETTE SPICUZZA/CHIEF/U.C. DAVIS CAMPUS POLICE

SOT: (0:22)

AND IT MAY BE HIDE, IT MAY BE HIDE AND THEN GET OUT, IT MAY BE JUST HIDE AND DON'T EVER COME BACK OUT AGAIN UNTIL YOU NOW ITS SAFE, IT MAY BE JUST GO FOR THE SIMPLEST EXIT, THE WINDOWS, THE DOORS, LISTEN TO WHAT THAT SHOOTER OR SHOOTERS ARE DOING, AND KIND OF GAUGE YOUR REACTION TO WHAT YOU'RE WATCHING AND HEARING FROM THAT INDIVIDUAL."

VO TAG:

CHIEF SPICUZZA SAYS THE SPARSE ATTENDANCE AT TODAY'S TRAINING SESSION WAS LIKELY BECAUSE IT WAS SCHEDULED DURING THE SCHOOL'S FINALS WEEK. SHE SAYS THE CAMPUS SHOOTING SURVIVAL TRAINING SESSIONS WILL BE REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES DURING UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.

EXTRA BITES:

SUPER: CHIEF ANNETTE SPICUZZA/U.C. DAVIS CAMPUS

SOT: (0:22)

SAYS: "THEY'RE HERE IN FINALS, AND THAT IS THE UNFORTUNATE PIECE ABOUT THIS, THAT IT WASN'T PLANNED SOONER. BUT THAT IT DID TAKE SOME WHILE TO GATHER THE INFORMATION, OUTLINE IT, GET THE POWER POINT TOGETHER, GET THE RIGHT PHOTOS, GET THE RIGHT VIDEOTAPES, AND THEN DO SOME PRACTICE RUNS WITH SOME, UM, INVITED GUESTS SO THEY COULD KIND OF PREVIEW IT AND CRITIQUE IT FOR US. WE WILL DO THIS AGAIN IN THE FALL WHEN THE KIDS ARE BACK."
