A STATE SENATOR SAYS EFFORTS TO FORCE HIS VOTE ON THE STATE BUDGET HAVE BACKFIRED, AND IS HOPEFUL A NEW BUDGET DEAL WILL EMERGE SOON. SENATOR JEFF DENHAM OF MERCED HAS BEEN PORTRAYED AS THE LAST HOLDOUT PREVENTING PASSAGE OF THE STATE BUDGET, WHICH IS NOW 47 DAYS OVERDUE.

DENHAM IS ONE OF 14 REPUBLICANS SENATORS DEMANDING CHANGES TO THE BUDGET APPROVED LAST MONTH BY THE STATE ASSEMBLY. DENHAM IS ONE OF THE FEW STATE LAWMAKERS ELECTED FROM WHAT'S CONSIDERED A LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT THAT COULD VOTE EITHER DEMOCRATIC OR REPUBLICAN, AND THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS LAUNCHED A RECALL EFFORT AGAINST DENHAM. ON MONDAY THIS WEEK, GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER SINGLED OUT DENHAM FOR THE BUDGET IMPASSE. DENHAM SAYS THOSE EFFORTS HAVE BEEN COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.
