RUBBER DUCKIES AT CAPITOL VO/SOT

LIVE: SOME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HOPE ONE THOUSAND RUBBER DUCKIES WILL PERSUADE THE GOVERNOR TO SIGN A BILL THAT WOULD BAN THE SALE OF TOYS WITH CHEMICALS CALLED PHTHALATES AND BISPHENOL A.

SUPER: TODAY/STATE CAPITOL/SACRAMENTO

VO: (:20) THE GROUP VISITED THE STATE CAPITOL WITH THEIR PHTHALATE FREE DUCKS THIS MORNING. THEY ARE SUPPORTING LEGISLATION THAT WOULD BAN COMPANIES FROM SELLING TOYS AND OTHER KIDS PRODUCTS THAT USE THE CHEMICALS IN QUESTION TO SOFTEN PLASTICS. THEY SAY THERE ARE OTHER PRODUCTS BEING USED IN EUROPE AND OTHER NATIONS WHERE PHTHALATES ARE BANNED, BUT LOBBYISTS FOR THE TOYS AND CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES SAY THE OTHER CHEMICALS COULD POSE OTHER POTENTIAL RISKS.

SUPER: DAN JACOBSON/LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR/ENVIRONMENT CALIFORNIA

SOT: (:23)

SAYS: "I DON'T THINK IT'S A GOOD ARGUMENT FOR THE CHEMICAL COMPANIES TO BE MAKING ... THEY CAN MAKE TOYS JUST LIKE THEY BRING THEM OVER THERE AND BRING THEM OVER HERE."

CONT. VO: (:20) THE BILL BY ASSEMBLYWOMAN FIONA MA IS SPONSORED BY ENVIRONMENT CALIFORNIA. HE ADMITS THAT GIVEN CHINA'S RECORD FOR DISCLOSING PRODUCT AND INGREDIENT INFORMATION, IT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL TESTING ON THE PART OF THE TOY COMPANIES.

SUPER: DAN JACOBSON/LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR/ENVIRONMENT CALIFORNIA

SOT: (:14)

SAYS: "WELL THAT'S TRUE, BUT THAT'S WHY IT'S IMPORTANT FOR THIS BILL TO PASS ... THEY'LL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE."

VO TAG: THE GOVERNOR HAS NOT YET TAKEN A POSITION ON THIS BILL. HE HAS UNTIL OCTOBER 12 TO SIGN OR VETO THE LEGISLATION.

EXTRA BITES:

SUPER: DAN JACOBSON/LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR/ENVIRONMENT CALIFORNIA

SOT: (:14)

SAYS: "THIS IS A BILL THAT WOULD ... FOR THE GOVERNOR, AND WE THINK HE'S GONNA SIGN THE BILL."

SUPER: RENE GUERRERO/WEST SACRAMENTO FATHER

SOT: (:14)

SAYS: "ESTAS QUIMICAS ESPECIFICAS ... PARA QUE ESTAN SALUDABLES."

SOT: (:21)

SAYS: "THESE KIDS ARE THE ONES ... GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR THEM."
