SPORTS ARENA AT STATE FAIRGROUNDS VO/SOT

LIVE:

THE STATE FAIR BOARD OF DIRECTORS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY THIS MORNING TO START FORMAL DISCUSSIONS WITH THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION TO BUILD A COMBINED SPORTS ARENA AND ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX AT THE STATE FAIR GROUNDS. THE ARENA WOULD BE THE NEW HOME COURT FOR THE SACRAMENTO KINGS, WHICH CURRENTLY PLAY AT ARCO ARENA

SUPER: TODAY/CAL EXPO/SACRAMENTO

VO: (:30)

ARCO ARENA IS ONE OF THE OLDEST VENUES CURRENTLY IN USE BY AN N-B-A TEAM. LAST NOVEMBER, VOTERS OVERWHELMINGLY REJECTED A PROPOSED TAX INCREASE TO BUILD A SPORTS ARENA IN DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO. REVENUES AND ATTENDANCE AT THE STATE FAIR HAVE DECLINED IN RECENT YEARS, AND CAL EXPO IS IN NEED OF ABOUT 40 MILLION DOLLARS IN DEFERRED MAINTENANCE. CAL EXPO GENERAL MANAGER NORB BARTOSIK SAYS BY LAW, THE STATE FAIR MUST BE SELF-FINANCED, AND CANNOT BE SUBSIDIZED BY MONEY FROM THE STATE'S GENERAL FUND. HE SAYS THE GOAL OF THE DISCUSSIONS WITH THE NBA IS TO BUILD A MONEY-MAKING FACILITY THAT WILL BE OWNED BY THE FAIR. BARTOSIK SAYS THE BOARD IS NOT CONSIDERING ANY OTHER MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS FOR THE FAIRGROUNDS.

SUPER: NORB BARTOSIK/CAL EXPO GENERAL MANAGER

SOT: (0:16)

SAYS: "THERE'S NONE IN GENERAL THAT WE HAVE, AGAIN, WE'RE OPEN TO DISCUSSIONS..., AND BROUGHT BACK TO THE BOARD FOR FULL CONSIDERATION."

SUPER: JOHN MOAG/NBA NEGOTIATOR

SOT: (0:25)

SAYS: "IT'S A BEAUTIFUL PEACE OF PROPERTY..., SO THERE'S A LOT OF PLUSSES TO THE PROPERTY."

SUPER: FILE

VO TAG:

JOHN MOAG WILL REPRESENT THE NBA IN ITS DISCUSSION WITH CAL EXPO. HE SAYS THE GOAL OF THE NBA AND CAL EXPO IS TO BUILD AN ARENA WITH EXISTING PUBLIC RESOURCES AND PRIVATE CONTRIBUTIONS, WITH NO TAX INCREASES.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

MOAG IS PRONOUNCED "MOGE," (SAME VOWEL AS BOAT)

EXTRA BITES:

SUPER: NORB BARTOSIK/CAL EXPO GENERAL MANAGER

SOT: (0:26)

SAYS: "THE PROJECT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DOESN'T TALK ABOUT ANYTHING BEING SOLD..., ...WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE."

SUPER: JOHN MOAG/ NEGOTIATOR FOR NBA

SOT: (0:00)

SAYS: "OBVIOUSLY, IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT A VERY EXPENSIVE ARENA..., ...PRIVATE CONTRIBUTION TO THIS PROCESS
