INDIAN CASINO REFERENDUM VO/SOT

LIVE: PROPONENTS OF BALLOT REFERENDA TO OVERTURN GAMBLING COMPACTS BETWEEN THE STATE AND FOUR INDIAN TRIBES ARE SUBMITTING SIGNATURES TO COUNTY REGISTRARS TODAY IN HOPES OF QUALIFYING THEIR MEASURES FOR THE FEBRUARY 2008 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY'S SUPPLEMENTAL BALLOT.

SUPER: TODAY/K STREET MALL/SACRAMENTO

SUPER: TODAY/SACRAMENTO COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE/SACRAMENTO

VO: (:30) THE NO ON THE UNFAIR GAMBLING DEALS COALITION COLLECTED A FEW LAST MINUTE SIGNATURES NEAR THE STATE CAPITOL THIS AFTERNOON BEFORE TURNING 40 BOXES OF SIGNATURES TO THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY REGISTRAR'S OFFICE. THE GROUP CONTENDS THAT THE COMPACTS GIVE FOUR TRIBES MORE THAN ONE THIRD OF THE STATE'S GAMBLING ASSETS AND WILL ALLOW FOR CONSTRUCTION OF CASINOS LARGER THAN LAS VEGAS'S. THOSE REPRESENTING THE FOUR TRIBES COUNTER THAT THE VEGAS GAMBLING INTERESTS AND OTHER TRIBES BANKROLLING THE REFERENDA ARE SIMPLY AFRAID OF COMPETITION.

SUPER: CHERYL SCHMIT/DIRECTOR/STAND UP FOR CALIFORNIA

SOT: (:44)

SAYS: "NINE BILLION DOLLARS OVER 20 YEARS ... NINE BILLION DOLLARS THESE TRIBES ARE PROMISING."

SUPER: SUPER: ROGER SALAZAR/INITIATIVE OPPONENT

VO TAG: THOSE FIGHTING THE COMPACTS ARE SUBMITTING 700 THOUSAND SIGNATURES. 433,971 MUST BE VALID FOR THE REFERENDA TO QUALIFY FOR THE SUPPLEMENTAL BALLOT IN FEBRUARY.
