As one of the Relay for Life teams, employees at Mademoiselle Salon and Spa in Merced will raise funds Saturday for the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
Spa owner Maria Lopez said the seven team members at her business will provide haircuts, massages and facial waxing, with all proceeds going to the cancer society and staying in this area. There also will be face painting, family activities and a barbecue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at 2807 N. G St.
Lopez is amazed at the response to their charity efforts. She expects at least 200 people to participate and hopes Saturday’s effort is the start a Relay for Life tradition in Merced.
Local businesses have donated hot dogs, buns, cookies, soda and water to be sold at the event. UC Merced students are volunteering to help at the 15 tables in the parking lot.

At 3 p.m., participants will walk to the Galeria Shopping Center and then to the gazebo at Laura’s Fountain in Applegate Park, where balloons will be released by breast cancer survivors. Pamphlets advocating breast cancer awareness will be available.
“We have committed ourselves to raising not only funds, but also awareness and support in our community through Relay for Life,” Lopez said.
