The Merced SPCA is holding a special adoption event called “Free Over Three.”
Any pet over the age of 3 can be adopted at no charge, pending approval and home visits. The event will be held Nov.2 from 10a.m. to 2p.m. at the SPCA’s Adoption Center, 1021 E. Childs Ave. Only Merced County residents are eligible, according to an SPCA press release.
“Our animals have a good life with us at the Merced SPCA,” said Carole Steinhauer, coordinator of the event. “But it’s not like being in a caring, forever home. We have modeled this event on similar ones at other shelters and, like them, we will be particular in the selection of adopters. There is a fairly detailed form to fill out and discuss with an SPCA representative and the adoption includes required home visits.”
Other requirements for adoption include providing proof that the applicant’s landlord accepts pets, verification of address as shown on a utility bill, and photo identification proving that the applicant is 18 or older.

Potential owners are advised to bring collars and leashes for larger dogs and carriers for cats and small dogs.
“This is the first time the Merced SPCA has done this type of adoption day,” Steinhauer said. “We are very excited about our over 3-year-old pets finding a home. We’re working hard to see that everything runs smoothly.”
