Los Banos man held on attempted murder

A man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder was arrested Monday after being involved in a drug transaction, Los Banos police said.

Police said Officer Kris Hew saw two men making a trade by hand in the 500 block of West I Street at 4 a.m. Both men then left the area in separate vehicles, police said.

Hew stopped one of the vehicles, a black four-door sedan, and spoke with the driver, Hugo John Garay, 31, of Los Banos. Police said Garay’s driver’s license was suspended and that they found 66 grams of what was believed to be methamphetamine. Garay was placed under arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale and driving with a suspended license. Garay is being held at the John Latorraca Correctional Center pending $16,080 bail.

Officer Danny O’Day saw the second vehicle, a brown Oldsmobile, and stopped it a short distance away, police said. During the stop, O’Day recognized one of the passengers as Victor Huerta Jr., 29, of Los Banos, who was wanted in connection with a February stabbing case.

On Feb. 13, a 33-year-old man told police he was walking to a neighborhood park with his children when Huerta approached him. He said Huerta asked what gang the man represented, and the victim replied that he was not a gang member. Huerta then stabbed the man in the arm and neck, police said.

Monday, Huerta was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Huerta is at the Los Banos Jail pending $500,000 bail.
