The current version of the GED test will expire at the end of the year, meaning students in the process of earning a high school credential need to complete their tests by mid-December.

Kristin Blanchard, chief examiner of Merced Adult School, said the current version, known as the 2002 Series GED test, will be replaced by the new GED test in January.

“Those who have taken the 2002 Series GED test but not passed all five parts have until the end of 2013 to pass or they will need to start over again in 2014 with the new GED test to receive their high school credential,” Blanchard said.

Those who have started GED tests using the paper-pencil version must complete their tests using that version. Paper-pencil testing is offered Saturdays. There is a Dec. 12 registration deadline for paper-pencil testing.

Debbie Glass, principal of Merced Adult School, said support for students is available. She said the school can help adult learners prepare to take the test portions they need to pass.

For those who started testing on computer, testing must be completed on computer. Computer-based testing at Merced Adult School is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. No more than two tests can be completed on any one day.

The GED test has opened doors to better jobs and college programs for more than 18 million graduates in its 71 years. Last year nearly 800,000 adults took the test, which is accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and employers.

Contact the Merced Adult School office at (209) 385-6524 for more information.
