Registration has begun for a half marathon geared to create a scholarship fund to benefit high school and junior college students who plan to attend UC Merced.
The inaugural Merco Credit Union Half Marathon is scheduled for 7 a.m. June 8. The race will start at UC Merced, with the route proceeding in a loop: west on Bellevue Road, south on M Street, east along the Black Rascal Creek Bike Path, north on Parsons Avenue, east on Dunn Road, north on Lake Road and back to UC Merced.
The event is being organized by the Merced Women’s Lawyer Association. Merco Credit Union has signed on as the event’s primary sponsor.
Nicole Silveira, president of the Merced Women’s Lawyer Association, said the race is also a way to draw visitors from outside Merced Count, to showcase what the area has to offer.

To promote the event, organizers are holding a contest for artists to design a medal for the half marathon. The winning submission will have the design displayed on the event’s website. Half marathon runners will each receive a medal.
The medal artwork should capture and reflect aspects of the greater Merced community, according to the event’s website. The competition is open to any original art (watercolor, acrylics, pastels, oils, photography, etc.) and has a two-entry limit. Submissions should be a 3-inch circular design and something that can translate to a medal as the medium. A design with vibrant colors and contrasts is preferred. Submissions should be delivered along with the submission form to the Merced County Women’s Lawyer Association, to the attention of Nicole Silveira, P.O. Box 1295, Merced, CA 95341-1295.
Travis Colby, a co-organizer of the event, said organizers are expecting high turnout, particularly with the increase in popularity of races over the years. Colby himself has competed in several marathons and half marathons around the nation. “The amenities this event will offer are going to be second to none. It will be an event runners will not want to miss,” he said.
Registration for the half marathon is $65, if submitted before Feb. 28.
The submission deadline for the medal design contest is Feb. 1. For registration, design contest submission forms and more information about the event, visit www.runningmerced.com or contact Nicole@mercedrunning.com.
