Witnesses said Martinez had been stopped near the center median of G Street, waiting to cross in a westbound direction. Martinez moved his electric wheelchair traveling westbound in the cross walk, in front of Balanon. Struble said Balanon applied her brakes, but was unable to avoid the collision. Struble said the “Don’t Walk” sign was lighted on the crosswalk when Martinez was trying to cross.
Balanon stopped her car immediately after the crash, Struble said. Martinez was taken to the hospital with major injuries.
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
