After coming from behind to win two games, the Dos Palos High School baseball team didn’t give up when facing a big deficit against Los Banos, but three LB pitchers combined to keep the Bronco bats silent in an 11-1 LB victory on Tuesday.
Los Banos capitalized on the mistakes Dos Palos committed, most notably when LB’s D.J. Lomeli singled, then came around to score along with Vincenzo Greco, who had been on first, after the Broncos threw the ball around, missing three connections (center fielder to third baseman, third baseman to catcher and catcher to third baseman).
“That always helps, but like I tell them, good teams benefit from mistakes, and that’s what we did,” first-year Los Banos coach Pat Fuentes said. “We played a good game, but ... we’re opening up next week with Central (Catholic), so we have to tighten it up.”
Lomeli’s hit was part of a four-run second inning for the Tigers, which started when Alec Barcellos walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Greco singled him home, and Michael Severino finished the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.
“Just make the routine plays; we can’t give them baserunners – that’s the key right there,” Dos Palos coach Kevin Jones said. “They’re the best team we’ve seen all year long, so you can’t make mistakes against a team like that. They’re well-coached, and you have to play almost a perfect game with them.”
Dos Palos’ only run came in the third, when Adam Coronado reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Los Banos (5-1) answered with two in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a Dos Palos error, two walks and a two-run single from Chris Corral. He was the first batter Travis Tovar faced after the Tigers chased starter Dominic DeFrancesco from the mound.
“That’s what we have to do to be successful,” Fuentes said. “We’re not going to hit too many bombs or doubles, we have to put pressure on them by doing the small things, and baserunning’s part of it. We work on that daily.”
Dos Palos (2-4) hosts the return trip of the two-game series on Thursday.
