Farmdale Elementary School put on an A-Z Salad Bar Extravaganza on Wednesday to promote healthy eating options for students.
A variety of fruits and vegetables – ranging from garbanzo beans to dragon fruit – were put on display during the school’s two-hour lunch period. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade learned about new foods and the benefits that come with choosing them.
“We wanted our students to see as many different healthy options as possible. We serve a salad bar on a daily basis, but we wanted to make something a little extra special,” said Charlene Barney, a food service consultant at Weaver Union School District.
According to Barney, the extravaganza is held at least once a year and is put on to coincide with local farmers markets. The produce comes from Fresh Point produce company in Turlock and is arranged by the combined efforts of Farmdale’s kitchen staff and Sodexo food services.

“We think it’s important to show children fruits and vegetables in their raw state,” said Barney. “The kids were thrilled. They felt fabulous and even asked if we can do this again tomorrow.”
