21-year-old man injured in Merced shooting

A man is in stable condition after being shot just after midnight Sunday in Merced, police reported.

Police went to an alley in the 200 block of W. 12th Street about 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire in the area, and found a 21-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds.

They were able to speak with the man shortly before he was taken to a Modesto-area hospital, police said.

The man was accompanied by two friends, neither of whom was injured. Both were interviewed but gave different statements about what happened before the shooting, police said.

The man and his friends had just left the Stop 2 Save liquor store at 1230 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Police said they believe a confrontation occurred outside or inside the store and continued in the alley, where the man was shot.

No one has been arrested in the shooting. Detectives hope surveillance video footage from the neighborhood will provide more details on what happened.
