A 31-year-old man was assaulted with some type of wrench Wednesday night in Atwater, police reported Thursday.
The victim, whose name is being withheld for his safety, was smoking a cigarette some time after 9 p.m. in the parking lot of R&N Market on Atwater Boulevard, Sgt. Dick Wisdom said.
The victim told investigators two men from a group of about five people approached him and asked if he wanted to purchase marijuana. “He told them he didn’t have any money, and that’s when one of them swings the wrench at him,” Wisdom said.
The man said he deflected one of the blows but was struck in the head by the second man, police said. Police said the victim did not lose consciousness but reported feeling dizzy and disoriented.

Investigators described this type of sudden, seemingly unprovoked attack as “unusual” for the area. Police could neither confirm nor deny potential street-gang connections in the case.
Investigators described one of the men as about 18 to 21 years old, wearing glasses, a white tank top and shorts. No other descriptions were available Thursday. Police said the group may have left the area in a white sedan, possibly an Acura.
