Hundreds of people filled the streets of south Merced on Friday to view a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, in recognition of Good Friday.
Sacred Heart Church puts on the Spanish language theatrical production every year.
The procession began outside the church and traveled through the adjacent neighborhood, stopping occasionally to act out events described in the New Testament via the stations of the cross. Actors dressed as Roman soldiers pretended to beat and whip a man who portrayed Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, actors portraying the disciples and other followers of Christ expressed the sadness and horror of the crucifixion as conveyed through biblical accounts.
Sacred Heart has been performing the Passion on Good Friday for more than 30 years, with a procession that begins and ends on 13th and Canal streets, culminating with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the two thieves.
