UC Merced police and California Highway Patrol officers on Wednesday held their “Bagging 4 Bucks” fundraiser for Special Olympics Northern California.
Law enforcement employees bagged groceries and escorted shoppers to their vehicles in exchange for tips at the Save Mart Supermarket at 150 W. Olive Ave. All of the collected tips will benefit Special Olympics.
This is the third year university police employees have participated in Special Olympics Northern California’s Law Enforcement Torch Run.
According to law enforcement, “Bagging 4 Bucks” is a great way to raise awareness about the more than 20,000 Special Olympics athletes from Northern California as well as an opportunity to build connections with people in the community.

UC Merced police held a similar event in 2012 and raised $2,348 on behalf of the Special Olympics.
Wednesday’s fundraiser kicked off with a presentation by some Special Olympics athletes sharing their experiences and describing how Special Olympics has affected their lives.
The fundraising efforts will culminate in the Merced County Law Enforcement Torch Run on June 18.
