Reporter gets recognition for story

Merced Sun-Star reporter Ramona Giwargis received a certificate of achievement at the 26th annual George F. Gruner Awards on Thursday.

Giwargis was recognized for her work on “Ambulance service is scrutinized, ” a story published in December 2012 that looked into Riggs Ambulance Service’s delivery of service requirements.

This is the second recognition Giwargis received for this story. Last weekend, Giwargis took first place in the Local Government Coverage category in an annual competition sponsored by the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

The Gruner Awards were established in 1989 by The McClatchy Co. to recognize outstanding public service in Central Valley journalism.

The awards, named in honor of the retired executive editor at The Fresno Bee, are sponsored by The Fresno Bee and Department of Journalism at Fresno State. This year’s event was held at the Fresno Art Museum. Judging is done by a panel of journalists outside the Valley.
