Suspects sought in Planada drive-by shooting

A woman and a 4-year-old girl survived a drive-by shooting during the weekend in Planada, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Both victims escaped without injury when multiple rounds were fired into the Honda Civic in which they were sitting around 1:15 p.m. Saturday, said Deputy Delray Shelton, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Deputies said the woman and child are related to a man they believe was the intended target, but declined to release any names for safety reasons. The intended target was not in the vehicle or the family’s nearby home in the 100 block of Arguello Drive in Planada.

Shelton said detectives are pursuing leads “aggressively.”

“People should know there’s zero tolerance for these incidents and gang issues,” Shelton said.

Investigators declined to comment on the number of shots fired or the caliber of firearm used in the attack.

Deputies described the suspect vehicle as a tan Honda Accord sedan. No suspect descriptions were available Monday.
