Planada gang member shot in groin area, deputies say

A Planada gang member was shot in the groin earlier this week, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Jose Saldana, 20, suffered a single gunshot wound below the belt around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Deputy Delray Shelton confirmed.

Saldana, whom investigators have previously described as a known gang member, told deputies he was working in a field by Bear Creek when he was shot.

He was unable to provide deputies with any suspect information, Shelton said.

Saldana was treated at an area hospital. His injuries were not life threatening.

He is the younger brother of Daniel Saldana, a man described in court records as a well-known and high-ranking gang member in Planada. Investigators said it was unclear whether the case was gang-related.
