Railroad crossings in Merced to be closed during face-lifts

The Union Pacific railroad crossings just south of 16th Street in Merced will be closed to traffic for one to three days beginning next week and continuing through the end of the month while they are upgraded.

Depending on the crossing, some of the intersections will get new tracks or a fresh concrete pad, or both, according to a press release. The city will post sign boards to notify drivers when the crossings will be closed, according to spokesman Mike Conway.

According to Union Pacific:

The railroad company has recently been replacing 92,700 railroad ties and upgrading 63 crossings between Turlock and Fresno. The $27.8 million project has employed about 175 people, according to a spokesman.

For questions on the project, call Union Pacific at (916) 789-5045.
