1 arrested in suspected DUI crash in Merced

A suspected drunken driver over the weekend crashed into a car that was driven by the wife of a Merced Superior Court judge, and debris from the crash injured a bystander, the Merced Police Department confirmed.

The suspect, Nicolas Miller, was arrested around 10 p.m. Saturday night after the crash at G and 22nd streets, police said.

Miller was booked at the Merced County jail on suspicion of felony drunken driving. He was no longer in custody Sunday, according to the jail.

Miller was the suspected driver of a red Ford Mustang that was headed south on G Street at an undetermined speed and struck another vehicle driven by Jessica Garcia, who is the wife of Judge Marc A. Garcia, Merced police reported.

Garcia told police the Mustang and another car “came racing down the street” as she pulled into the intersection, heading west across G Street on 22nd Street. The other vehicle, for which no description was available, sped away after the collision, police said.

It was unclear if the Mustang and the other vehicle were street racing, according to police.

A wheel from one of the vehicles came off during the crash and struck 49-year-old James Williams on a nearby sidewalk. Williams suffered unspecified minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital, police said.

Garcia declined medical attention at the scene.
