Free day at Kiddieland
Kiddieland will be free on July 19. Concession opens at 12 p.m. and free rides from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by Merced Elks Lodge #1240. Come have lunch and enjoy Kiddieland for the afternoon. Kiddieland is in Merced’s Applegate Park, near Q and 25th streets.
Discussion of military funeral honors
The Hampshire independent senior living community will host soldiers from the California Veteran Honors Program at 11:30 a.m. July 18 to discuss military funeral honors. The Hampshire is located at 3460 R St. in Merced. The purpose of the event is to formally educate the public, funeral providers and veterans organizations on military funeral honors benefits, entitlements, regulations and protocol. Merced College Retired Women meeting
The Merced College Retired Women will meet for their monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. July 10 at La Hacienda 2, 3355 G St. The no-host luncheon is an opportunity to visit with retired friends and to keep informed about upcoming events and happenings at Merced College.
Merced Art Hop
Artists representing a multitude of modes and genres will take over downtown Merced on July 19, as the Art Hop once again provides a night of entertainment for the entire family. Center accepting groups
Merced is looking for groups to operate the McNamara Park Community Center and provide youth programming and other activities. Groups can use the building at no cost; the city will pay for utilities. In order to qualify, applicants must have 501(c)(3) status, be able to provide $1 million in insurance and have been in existence for at least six months. A joint application by two or more groups is acceptable. The deadline for applications is noon, July 31. Social media class
Merced College is offering a new social media course for certification. The online class runs from July 14 through Aug. 24. The training course is available through Merced College’s Community Services program, which is recognized as a National Institute for Social Media-approved training partner and testing center. Disabled American Veterans seeks volunteers
If you want to help veterans, Disabled American Veterans is looking for men and women to be volunteer drivers. Volunteering to drive a vet ensures that even those who live some distance from VA hospitals can make their appointments and not go without the treatment they need. The Horatio Alger Cortopassi Family Foundation is offering vocational scholarships for community college students. Students can receive $2,500 per semester, up to a maximum of $10,000.
