2 with Atwater gang ties fired on, police say

A gunman fired up to six shots Monday night into a car occupied by people with known Atwater gang ties, police said.

No one was injured and no suspects are in custody, Atwater police Lt. Samuel Joseph said.

The intended targets, two men whose names were withheld for safety reasons, were seated in a blue 2011 Nissan Altima about 10 p.m. parked on the street in the area of Sixth Street and Quince Avenue.

“We do believe this incident was gang related,” Joseph said.

Police said the shooter, described as a Latino man who walked with a limp, stood on the passenger side of the vehicle and fired four to six shots from an undetermined distance.

The man was last seen in the area wearing a white T-shirt and a red hat, authorities said.

No one inside the vehicle was hit, but the car was struck by gunfire at least twice, police said.

Officers said the people in the car were uncooperative with investigators.

Police described the intended targets as having “known gang affiliations.” Investigators said the attack was likely part of an ongoing feud between gang rivals.
