AARP wants endowment at Merced College

The Merced chapter of AARP donated $25,000 to Merced College this month, a first step toward a permanent endowment.

AARP will continue to provide $2,000 in annual scholarships while building its endowment over several years, according to Robin Shepard, executive director of the Merced College Foundation.

“Our friends at our local AARP chapter have supported our scholarship program for many years,” Shepard said in a press release. “With this new commitment, we will be able to guarantee awards in perpetuity.”

The Merced College Foundation was established in 1973 as the nonprofit fundraising arm of Merced College. The foundation aims to ensure a high-quality, affordable and accessible education to those wanting to learn.

Norman Vaughn-Hulbert, president of Merced’s AARP chapter, said his organization is dedicated to community service and advancing the interests of the area’s senior citizens, according to a press release.

AARP is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people 50 and older.
