Maine based healthcare provider reports email hack

A Portland, Maine, based health care provider was the target of a hack that potentially compromised the information of about 30,000 patients.

InterMed said in a news release Tuesday an "unauthorized third party" accessed the email account of an employee sometime from Sept. 4-6.

The Portland Press Herald reports the account contained information that may include patients' names, birth dates, health insurance information and the Social Security numbers for 155 patients.

InterMed spokesperson John Lamb says patients were notified of the breach this week following the completion of an independent "manual review of all potentially impacted files," conducted by a forensics team.

InterMed CEO Dan McCormack says the company is "accelerating plans already underway to strengthen our security."

Lamb says InterMed isn't aware of any patients reporting their information is being misused.
