Ahead of Memorial Day driving, Sacramento-area gas prices fall again

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, gas prices are dipping downward.

The average retail price of gasoline in the Sacramento area fell another 3.4 cents over the past week to $4.03 per gallon, according to national gas price tracker, which does a daily survey of more than 700 gas outlets in the regiona. It was the second consecutive weekly decline; the previous week, at-the-pump costs fell an average 4.1 cents.

Prices are now 5.8 cents higher than a year ago but only 1.3 cents higher than last month.

Nationally, the average pump price stayed locked at $3.62 a gallon, matching the previous week’s average. The current national average is 5 cents below last year, and the same as a month ago.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said retail fuel prices would have declined further, but wholesale oil prices “perked back up” last week, which affected the price that consumers pay.
