Sacramento-area gas prices dip below $4-a-gallon threshold

The average retail price of gasoline in the Sacramento-area fell below $4 a gallon over the past week, the first time it has been below that threshold since mid-April.

National gas price tracker, which surveys more than 700 regional gas outlets daily, said the average price dropped about a penny over the past week to settle in at $3.99 a gallon.

The current average is 14.4 cents higher than a year ago but 9.1 cents lower than last month.

Nationally, the average pump price also fell about a penny over the past week to $3.63 a gallon, nearly matching the average price of last month and last year.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said in a statement that he couldn’t “recall the last time that the national average...was the same yesterday, a week ago, a month ago and also a year ago.” He said think it’s possible “that we just won’t see any sort of major summer decline like we have the last few years.”
