Stella, described as the world’s first solar-powered family car, made its sleek debut in Davis on Friday. Designed by students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, the car can drive up to 500 miles on a single charge and is intended to be “energy positive,” producing twice as much energy as it uses. Equipped with rooftop solar panels, it seats four comfortably.
Its appearance in Davis is part of a weeklong California road trip that started in Los Angeles and ends Monday in San Francisco. Stella’s U.S. tour is sponsored by NXP Semiconductors, a Netherlands-based company that manufactures car-to-car communication tools and other technologies.
