See it: $18.5M Bay Area winery and estate with Zen-style architecture goes to auction
After listing for $18.5 million, a Northern California winery — with a three-bedroom main residence and two-bedroom guest house of elegant Japanense-style design — will go to the highest bidder in an auction this month.
The West Wind Estate & Winery sits on a “sun-drenched slope of Black Mountain” in Marin County about an hour from the Napa and Sonoma wine country, according to the property’s auction website.
Sotheby’s Concierge Auction is handling the no-reserve auction, with bidding taking place March 15-21, 2023.
The residences on the property, which overlooks the Nicasio Reservoir, were completely designed and constructed in the traditional Sukiya style of architecture, giving it a Zen-like aesthetic.
“The effect is stunning in both aesthetics and execution, from the Sakura cherry hardwood floors to the ceilings of wide-plank cedar, customized by room throughout both homes,” according to the property
Each of the suites in the main home become private by closing the Japanese Fusuma wooden doors that separate the spaces from the main living areas.
On the 32-acre property, walking paths connect formal Japanese gardens, organic orchards and two acres of vineyards. There is a 50,000-gallon spring-fed pool and a Bocce court. The top of the property stands at 800-foot elevation, offering ocean views from one side.
“The tranquilty and the peace is something we really value,” John Klock, the seller, said in a promotional video.
The sale includes the 1,800-square-foot winery next to a 2,400-square-foot wine cave — the only one in the county, according to Klock — and a traditional Kura, where the wine is made. The grapes, planted in 1999, are mostly pinot noir with some cabernet franc. The winery sells direct to consumer.
The main home spans about 3,000 square feet.
“We feel that we have an exceptional property to offer—one rarely seen in this market, if ever—which makes this an even more unique opportunity to purchase,” said listing agent Stephanie Lamarre of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Real Estate in a news release.
