Merced homicide victim identified

A man shot and killed over the weekend on West 11th Street was identified Monday as a 25-year-old Merced resident.

Victor Manuel Cati died at a regional hospital a short time after Merced police officers found him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the Merced County Coroner’s Office told the Sun-Star.

No arrests have been made.

Capt. Tom Trindad said Monday police had no new information to release.

Police responded just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of shots fired. Officers found Cati suffering from numerous gunshot wounds in the 100 block of West 11th Street, near I Street, officers said.

Paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about one hour later, police said.

Investigators believe the case may be gang-related.

The homicide is the 10th reported of 2014 in Merced, and the 21st in Merced County. In 2013, Merced County reported a record number of homicides at 29, with just four occurring in the city of Merced.
